A little more research into previous threads here on this topic, which were far from scientific and conclusive, compelled me to find some info from the industry that manufactures and sells brighteners. I think one of the biggest makers of UV optical brighteners (BASF/UVITEX / CIBA) has made me see the "light" on this topic:
"Unlike dyes, FWAs offset the yellowish cast and at the same time improve lightness because their bluing effect is not based on subtracting yellow-green light, but rather on adding blue light. FWAs are virtually colorless compounds which, when present on a substrate, absorb primarily invisible ultraviolet light in the 300-400 nanometer (nm) range and re-emit in the visible violet-to-blue fluorescent light."
The link to a document that contains this info is:
It looks like UV light is not the problem, per se, but the added blue light in the visible spectrum that the brighteners help fluoresce. Deer can definitely see blue light, and probably better than we can. Having said that, it now looks like it would take special circumstances to really be in a situation where you were glowing like a blue light bulb. The good news is that there are plenty of detergents that cost as much as Tide or All that omit the brightener, so you can get all of the benefits of the $12 per 30 load "Anti- UV Hunter" detergents for the price of $4 for 30 loads.

Does that stuff have a certain shelf life?Originally posted by Delirious View PostNever on my camo. Some of it has UV brighteners. I use the E3. If you guys will look sharp at Dicks sporting goods after Christmas, all the scent elimination stuff goes on sale. I picked up some of those large E3 jugs for 5 bucks a piece.
