If its a really older PSE with the steel cables, the strings are very cheap, as in $15.00-$20.00

Wow really. If he wants to get hurt sure use it. But tell him to spend 20 bucks and get a string. Cables are good?

20 bucks? I don't think shoe strings will work. That sounds just as dangerous.

I told him to restring it, but if he decides not to; go a head and wear a heavy jacket, ski mask, gloves and some saftey glasses.

Besides injury to you, when a string breaks, it usually causes the cam to hit limbs damaging limbs and bending the cam. Its a bad deal all the way across the board. I replace string every year unless damaged and needed earlier.
