I've got the Danner Pronghorns with 800g insulation. A lot of people say that's too much, but for my style of hunting, it's not enough IMO. For hiking, you'll probably want less, 400-600 should do fine, some say even 200 if all you're going to do is walk. But IMO, and I'm ceratainly no expert, 400-600 for mixed type, walking/sitting hunts is probably going to be good. My 800's are still pretty cold when sitting on cold mornings and evenings, but if I have to walk very far, they are too much and my feet will sweat, which is even worse. One thing I learned last year that helped immensely was HOT HANDS, but not like you think. They make some called Toasty Toes that go in your boot, they didn't work worth a darn for me, not enough air flow I guess. What I did was to take regular Hot Hands and put them in my pockets and place them over my femoral artery right at my groin area. My idea was to keep my core warmer, including my upper legs and the blood flowing through my femorals down to my feet. Warm blood to the feet equals warm feet was my thought, and danged if it didn't work! Just have to be sure to have a layer of clothing (or two thin layers) under the hot hands, otherwise you may burn yourself. I never believed those things could burn you, but I was mistaken, they can, I got second degree burns from them sitting in the same spot too long without having enough fabric beneath them. The Game Winner brand from Academy don't get as hot, so they were fine.
