    Getting rid of the shine

I have a item that is Nickel Plated, it's not as shiny as stainless stuff, but has some "sparkle" to it.
What can I put on it to remove dull the shine? I'd love to have it Galvanized dipped but that's impossible. So the next step is dull the shine.

    Any suggestions?

Someone suggested Vinegar.....That didn't work. I can dip it so anything that has to set in a solution for a day is ok.

can you use a scotchbrite pad and hand sand it to a dull finish?

Nickel doesn't etch with vinegar, ferric, or muratic acid. That's why it's used heavily in Damascus steel so that the acids don't etch it. Sulfuric acid may etch it, but then your getting into stuff you don't really want to have around.

If possible your best bet may be putting a brush finish on it like bowtecmike mentioned. A scotchbrite pad or 600 grit sandpaper in smooth one direction strokes would do the trick.
