    Fletching arrows

How hard is it. Putting on 4" vanes with lots of helical, and I have never fletched any arrows. What kind of fletching rig do i need? What other supplies will I need? Thanks guys!

its not bad at all. i got an EZ fletch mini for blazers and I haven't had any trouble.

I prefer the Bitzenberger jig. It tends to be more versatile and adjustable. You'll also need glue and I use 91% alcohol to clean the arrows before I fletch them if I'm not putting on wraps.

Don't get discouraged with the way the first few dz look. It takes a while to get good at it and sometimes mine still have some extra glue spots on them. Functional is the key phrase here.

I bought the right helical blitzenburger jig. I shoot right handed, is this the correct helical for me or should I have gotten the left helical?

I believe you have the correct one, I jsut started fletching my own and found out i was putting on too much glue, go sparingly with the glue at first to get a feel for it, if it isn't enough then take off and reapply. I'm not sure about the Jig you have, but I know in the EZ fletch Mini I have to watch the position of the veins to make sure they don't "ride up" in the slot.

After you get them fletched don't stand them up in a bunch because they will all get stuck togeather and then you will get to practice scraping them clean and starting over. I got a 2x4 and drilled some small holes about 2" from each other to hold the arrows.

It's all personal preference, you'll be fine with the right wing jig. I typically use fine grit sand paper to rough up my shafts and then clean them up with alcohol prior to fletching to insure the surface will accept the glue (I've been using Loc Tite Control Gel for several years with good results). If you have a scale it's a good idea to weigh all your vanes before application to make sure they're all the same, it's not uncommon to have a few odd ones here and there. The next step is to weed out the one's with messed up bases (I've have this problem with blazers and mini-blazers), next decide how far you want to have the vanes mounted from the throat of the nock (just test fit a dry vane in your jig and move it to where you want them to be) then use a fine tip Sharpie and mark your jig at the LEADING edge of the vane. Now you're all setup and ready to fletch, make sure you allow enough time for the glue to bond properly between vanes and you'll be good to go.

I just started doing my own as well. I bought the E-Z Fletch Mini for the Blazers, and found it to be pretty simple. I do suggest using the super glue gel. It seemed to work better for me than the Bohning Fletch-Tite. I like the 2x4 idea. Going to try that for the next round.

Drop a bit of glue on the front and the back after fletching. That helps to keep the vane from tearing off when it sinks deep into a target, or when it passes thru that animal. BTW, fletching is not as hard as the first time you asked a girl out for the first time. LOL
