    Draw Length Question

Back when I started bowhunting several years ago, I was told I was a 28" draw length. The thing is I think I might actually be longer than that. When I set my bow at 28" it wants to creep forward and my front elbow has a pretty good bend to it. When I set my bow at 29" my bow still has a slight bend to it, but the creep goes away. I am wondering if I reach my true anchor point at 29" and therefore eliminate the creep? Any thoughts are observations on what I have said?

If you have a Gander Mountain near you, go there. I just had mine checked and they use a bow with a marked arrow shaft to check it. When you draw it back they take the reading from the marked arrow shaft and that will tell you exactly how many inches of draw you need for your specific anchor point. Worked for me anyway. I did the wing span divided by 2.5 and it was almost dead on. I just wanted a second opinion so I went to GM.

Draw length measurements are rough. You need to have a little flex in your elbow and at full draw, it has to be comfortable. 28 or 29 is just a starting point and I am no expert. Everyones draw length is not an exact even numbers like 28, 29, 30. That is just where you start at and adjust the bow, string, etc, till it's right.

If you feel most comfortable at 29 and your string arm is pointing straight away. Not back or down or elbow too high I would say your good to go there

The number one thing to keep in mind is your lean at the hip. Keep pressure on your front leg to avoid "leaning". 80% of shooters lean back when drawing a bow which helps in holding back increased draw weight, but it is absolutley the wrong way to shoot. Have someone take a pic of you at full draw and insure that you are standing vertical, weight on front foot and the apex of the string even with the center of your eye. Another thing I see new shooters do is use a wrist release that is too long. Meaning using your fingertip to pull the trigger. The jaws of your release should be no further past the second joint in your trigger finger.

I'm not an expert and I didn't stay at a holiday inn last night. However, I have been shooting a bow for about 10yrs now and I prefer a small amount of bend in my elbow. I shot 28 for a few years and then went to 29 which improved my shooting quite a bit. Sounds like 29 might be good for you, but you definitely don't want a ton of bend at your elbow.

i can also say 100% that a 28" on a mathews is longer then a 28" on a bowtech. I've owned both and they are different for sure.

I usually shoot 27.5, 28, 28.5 in a bow the choose the one that i think is most comfortable.

I have been shooting for 21 years. 2 years ago I shortened my release into the palm of my hand, got another 1" of drawlength out of my bowtech. It's shooting 325 fps. I bought a monster xlr8, set it at 30" draw like my bowtech, was shooting 352fps, but cannot shoot consistently with it! I went back to my 2005 bow tech. Someone told me I should try to shorten the monster's draw length a bit, but I'm too happy with the bowtech to worry about it.

Have someone take a pic of you from the side at full draw, this is what it should look like

Notice that the string is just touching the nose. If the string goes past the nose you have to long a dl.
