    Buying first bow?

Hey everyone quick question as I am new to bowhunting and to texasbowhunter.com. I went to my local archery shop and went ahead and got measured and was told I need a bow with a 31" draw length. I would like all of your opinions on good options for bows out there for a guy my size. I'm 6'4" and I know this limits my choices to a certain extent. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have the funds you should look into the Mathews Z7 Magnum. It is going to be SUPER forgiving with over 8" of brace height and is offered in up to 32" draw. Would probably be a great bow for a newbie... again assuming you have the funds for it.

    Welcome to the green screen!

I shoot a Mathews Drenalin LD that is good to 31" but Mathews just replaced it with the Z9 and I don't think anyone has much experience with that one yet. The only drawback I see to my LD is it is very long Axle to Axle and harder to hunt with in tight quarters.

I know some of the other manufactures make longer draw bows but I have no experience with them. I am sure some other "Ape Arm" shooters will come along with some more advise.

Don't be afraid to try the bows from Bear Archery. They are well made, shoot great, and are a fraction of the price of the more popular names.

Good luck with that one! I got into Archery a few months back. I decided it was time to take the leap so I went to my local Archery Shop (a sponsor of this site).

All the differences were explained to me but it all came down to what felt good to me. You have Mathews, Bowtech, Hoyt, Bear, PSE, etc, etc, etc. Like Chevy, GMC, Ford, Dodge, Toyota, etc, etc, there are so many makes and each has likes and/or dislikes.

Stay away from a place that you cannot try out the bow...please let the pro shop dudes let you test drive a few. Don't buy what your friends have. It's great to get feedback on what are good choices to look into. But at the end of the day, it's your money being spent! Do your homework and try a few out!

I went with the one that felt most comfortable to shoot for me AND fell within my budget. I really wanted to go with the Bowtech Destroyer or the Mathews Z7 but they were a little out of my reach by the time I added the rest, sight and release. Ignore the terminology, just go with what 'feels' pretty good to you.

              Cheers!

The Mathews Z9 has up to a 32" draw with a 8 3/4" brace height. If it shoots like the Z7 Extreme it will fit the bill just fine.

Just wanted to post a quick thank you to all that replied to my post. I live in the DFW area and if anyone knows a good shop that you trust please send the info my way. I'm looking forward to making this decision and getting out in the field.

I have been very happy with my Z7. Don't rush into a purchase without taking the time to research and shoot different bows. Also, I would only purchase a bow from a reputable bow shop that will service and maintain your bow. Good luck with your purchase.
