I havent shot an Elk yet. I have a TC Encore 300 Win Mag that is a beast. The best part is I can get bored with it and it aint but a couple hundred bucks and can get a new caliber.

I have killed 2 bull elk, both with a 300 win mag at "western" yardages. I watched my Dad drop a spike bull with my .270. The 06 will be fine. I would suggest if you are going to step up to a biiger gun, go large bore. The 300 mags and wsm's are still 30 caliber bullets, just traveling faster. Basically a souped up 30-06 that will perform better at longer range. If I were to get a bigger rifle, I'd look at either the 375 HH mag or the venerable 45-70. The .338 (aka the 30-06 of Alaska) also gets an honorable mention.

300 Win Mag if you want a new gun '06 will be plenty if you don't want a new gun

Dude, I shot a cow elk a few years ago with a .308 @ 365 yards.. Dead elk!

.308 is all you need.. I used 165gn hornady.. Bullet was stuck in the hide on the opposite side.. Cool to have!

            I already have a .308 but isn't that smaller than 06?

Chunter, I have a good friend that has a 308, and he has some loads worked up and I promise you wouldnt want to be close to the receiving end of it, he also killed a cow shot in the neck @ 275+ yards... D-O-A... no chasing... just my .02 worth.. hope this helps.. and no the bullets will interchange between a 08 and 06, just different case sir...

he told me just now, they are Barns triple shocks hes shooting...

Thanks man! I love my .308 but I would have sworn that the guide where we will be hunting said that it was smaller than the 06. I will have to get in touch with him and double check. I know that my .308 will do the job this is just the prefence of the outfitter. Also found a 7mm that an in-law has for sale. I am not sure but I think that it would be bigger than the 06? Maybe not. Anyone know where to I can find a list of modern calibers in order of size? I am not having any luck finding one.

I think your over thinking. You can kill an elk with your 06 easily. Save your money take your wife out for a special night so she won't be so made when you spend to much on your elk hunt.

I would take this opportunity to buy something smaller in the 7mm range like a .280rem for sheep hunting, or a 7mm wsm.

Are you talking bore diameter or power? .308 and .30-06 are both .308" nominal bore diameter. 7mm is .280. All cartridges offer very similiar power within 200 yards. All kill numerous elk cleanly every year.

                          I agree

                          06 is plenty of gun

However, if you're looking for an excuse to buy a new gun... go get it
