    Walkback tuning

How do you do walk back tuning with just a single block target? Not sure which target I have, but it's about 20 inches tall and about 14 inches wide of compressed foam. I've done it with hay bales before (no longer have use of them). Always place a centerline vertically and a paint dot near the top of the line. Always use the same pin as I shoot from 10 yrds, 20 yrds and 30 yrds, and always aim for the same spot (How far should I walkback tune to) Obviously using the same pin, I'm hitting lower and lower on the target each yardage, but with a round bale, I had plenty of area to work with. I think I can use different pins for the longer shots (haven't thought of a reason why it would make a difference, but was told once to use one pin). If I use different pins, I can still aim for the centerline and stay on the block vertically. Also, would I adjust my rest after each yardage? Or am I totally wrong on everything.

On a side note, I'm pretty good on my groupings at 25 yards which would be about the longest shot I could make where I hunt. I want to start practicing out to 35 or 40 to make the 25's easier, but I can't consistently hit at 35. It almost always misses right. I've noticed that my 10 yard shots are dead on and my 25 yrd shots are an inch or so right, but at 35 it's waaay off.

The reason you use the same pin is to eliminate that the sight may be slightly off plumb. I walk back to 40. Is there a Tractor Supply near you? If so go see if they have any of the big Styrofoam blocks that their trailers are shipped on. Get 4 of them and throw a ratchet strap around them and tighten it down, instant 2'x3' target

Thanks, I'll see what I can track down.

Here's a rundown of how I have always done it...

Hang a vertical line (string line/plumb line) or take a level and marks alot and mark a vertical line on your target bag. Shoot near the top of the line with your 20 yd. pin. Now move back to 30 and shoot at the same spot (top of line) with your 20 yard pin again. Now move back to 40 and shoot at the same spot (top of the line) with your 20 yard pin. Now move back to 50 and do the same (using your 20 yd. pin). If your arrows are tailing off to the left as they impact the target your center shot is off to the left and you need to move your rest very slightly and I mean very slightly (1/32 to 1/16) to the right. You do the opposite if your arrows are tailing off to the right. Your center shot is correct when your arrows are hitting on the line (or very close to the line) from 20 to 60 yards. Once you get your center shot right then you can make some fine sight adjustments if necessary.
