    Jon boat build

My 13 yr old son has wanted a boat for several years. This year for Christmas I found him a project boat I thought would be fun for us to play around with. Here’s what we started with. The hull is 14/42 it’s an older boat with a converted jet ski trailer

The first step was stripping a lot of old paint and removing all the wood inside. Unfortunately at some point treated wood was used and I found some corrosion if a few places

Got it repainted and a new sealed wood transom put in. The next metal work will include bracing the transom a little more and capping it with some channel.

Then we will move to building an aluminum deck and some sort of bench seat for the rear

Awesome! There is a nice 25hp suzuki in the classifieds you need to put on the back of that thing!

Cool project, he will really enjoy his time on the water in that.

Love to have it but a little pricey for dad and a lot of motor for him.

Looking for a 15 hp pull start ideally to start with

I am a jon boat connoisseur, Currently have 4.

A older Carb OMC or Mercury 15hp will be perfect for that boat.
Easy to work on and parts are available and cheap.
Very dependable as long as you pull the fuel line and run all of the gas out of the carb after each use.
Will run in the low to mid 20's with 2 people and gear.

The newer 4 stroke motors are dogs compared to a good running carb 2 stroke motor.

Those older Carb 15's only weigh around 70 lbs.

A carb 2 stroke 20 or 25 would be too much power for that boat.
I have a heavy all welded 1448 and it flys with a 25 two stroke

Put a set of Chris Carson reed valves on it and it will be the smoothest idling, best running motor you ever had. Best $20 bucks you can spend on a small motor.

In other news, I am looking for a 1442 jon for a project if you come across another one. I am in the process of restoring an old 1648 right now.

Hope you teach him how to scull from the front of the boat with a short 3' paddle. My Dad and I spent many a day sculling for bass, bream, and crappie before trolling motors came out. It is quiet, easy, and all you need it the paddle and fishing gear to go catch some fish.

I’ve got a 1442 just sitting right now. Doesn’t have any issues that I recall, just a bare boat.

Currently looking to replace a carb for a Yamaha 50 if you have any leads on where to get one. It’s the 3-stack carb and I’d rather replace than rebuild.

Coated the bottom with gator glide today. I’ll be curious to see how it holds up
