This was definitely a project where I didn't understand what I was getting myself into. So, much sanding and finishing. Since a wine barrel is three dimensional and the top and bottom are the only flat surfaces, everything was just a bit more difficult than I anticipated. I think they turned out well though.
Upper barrel is a liquor cabinet with a lazy susan on the floor of the barrel and midpoint which allows me to access the entire round shelf. Bottom barrel is wine storage which will hold 26 bottles.
The wine racks took a lot of experimenting and mock up. The bottles are supported front and back with a cant towards the front. Once, I got the spacing between bottles correct I cut a template and then just varied the length of shelf. Similarly, the lazy susan took a lot of tinkering.
The barrels were pretty rough when I got them off FB market place.
Lots of sanding and polishing.
I didnt take many pics of the staining and sealing. Just regular wood stain and flat polyurethane.
Toughest parts were cutting the door opening and sanding the charred interior down so that it could be sealed. Hinges dont like to work in three dimensions. My solution was to buy cheap thin hinges, screw them in place with the door adjusted and then just forcefully open the door. The hinges flexed and bent as needed. The hinges have to be reasonably close to the centerline of the barrel
