I just got all of the instructions off of the DIY channel on TV. I looked at their website some then went at it. It took me a full weekend to get it done.
Any pointers after doing it yourself? I just finished installing the concrete base. I'm waiting for things to dry up a bit and then I'll start with the inner ring of fire brick. Is there anything you would have done differently?
Did you see any advantage to laying your fire brick down rather than standing it on edge?

Yes! A few things. I used a rock chisel and hammer to angle each piece of limestone to make a tighter joint. If I had to do it again, I'd use a grinder w/ a diamond blade, or a chop saw to cut the stone. It would have made a much prettier joint. I also would have used grey mortar. I hadn't seen a job with white rock and grey mortar until yesterday and I liked it better. I might stand the firebricks up next time but I tried it each way and like it better laying down. Just be careful to keep the diameter the same at the bottom as at the top. I accidently coned my in a bit. You can't really tell because the flagstone covers it up. I used the grinder to cut the flagstone and it worked very well.
Just let me know if you have any other questions! Have a good time. It's a rewarding project.

That's a great idea. We've got to rebuild our firepit at the lease so I think we'll try the horseshoe idea. We're always burning long logs.

That's a darn good idea. I might have to try that on my next one. Until then, I'll have to keep the chainsaw handy.
