Rocket Stove Question

I got a set of plans for a rocket stove online and attempted my own build. The plans called for 4x4 tube, but I had some 6x6 scrap. That was the only deviation. While using it this past weekend, it worked well, but had a tendency for the wood to start burning up inside the fuel tray. Can I prevent this by changing the angle of the fuel chute? I was thinking of dropping it down a little closer to level. Any feedback is appreciated.

It did get hot enough to cook breakfast tacos in.

Smaller intake manifold so it drafts more through the tray..?

I don’t know the 1st thing about a rocket stove, but I believe I’d close off that opening at the bottom of the other side. If the only source of incoming air is through the fuel tube, I think it would force the draft up the main tube.

That’s just my guess though.

Thanks guys. I think I can come up with a “damper” to adjust the air intake. I’ll give it a try and see.

Rocket Stove Question

If that’s an opening on the back, close it. Also take a 6x6 plate and cut a 4x4 hole in it. Weld it to the intake opening on a hinge. That way, while burning there is a lip to stop fire from jumping out and also a smaller, more focused intake. Then when you want to dump out ashes it’s hinged for that. Or weld a slot to drop it down into.

Too much air in your fuel tray. Put a lid on it.

Just to clarify, I’m looking at putting an adjustment on the air intake to be able to fine tune the combustion. That will go in the circled area below.

On the fuel chute!! That is the intake. That fuel chute needs to be the one and only air source.

I’m gonna try dampening the air intake on the back/bottom. Once I figure out the best combination, I’ll build another.

My gut tells me, too much air flow also. In for the results.

So I took the piece I cut out of the back for the air intake and set it in the opening this past weekend. It appears to have helped solve the issue of burning up into the fuel chute. I do think I’ll leave a hinged covering in the back to ease the removal of ashes.
