You can do it. There are some great YouTube videos.
PAY ATTENTION! DO NOT BE IN A HURRY. ALLOW NO DISTRACTIONS (Kids, phone, friends, etc.) You'll save some bucks and get a great feeling of accomplishment.

Leave it to the garage door service peps...not worth getting hurt or causing more damage to door.

I did once, probably hire it done next time. Lots that can go wrong.

I repaired mine once. Watching that little cable slide across my finger at 100+ mph was quite a thing to see!! Didn't know a finger could bleed that much.

I would probably do it again but would definitely slow down and take my time.

I did it once, and will do it again, as needed. All it takes is the proper tools, proper level of awareness, an understanding about, and respect for, the rapid change of state that can occur between potential and kinetic energy in the system, and a little caution. I based my decision to replace mine watching a "trained professional" do it and thinking "this guy has no business being anywhere near a torsion spring!" If you have enough sense to safely operate a firearm or motor vehicle, then you should be okay.

I paid a guy less than $300 to fix mine. There is a lot of tension on those springs and things can go south in a hurry if you make a mistake.

I have been around too many guys that I would trust to do it and they hurt themselves along the way. One slip and you have stitches, loose a finger or get impaired. Typically I am all for doing things myself. On these though I see more first timers hurt themselves selves than not. If you must do it though buy the right tools and treat it like you would setting a bear trap.

My cousin lost 3 teeth doing it on his own. He knew what he was doing but the rod slipped and popped him square in the mouth.

Normally in favor of DIY projects, but I keep picturing one of those big wooden rat traps -- except with torsion springs 100 times larger and more powerful on a garage door.

Springs including torsion rods are suppose to be here tomorrow. Here is the video I have been watching. I will decide after I torque up on the one good spring. If I can carefully get the tension off the rest looks pretty easy. $#it happens quick so I will go slow. I will update when done. I was laid off after 38 years with the same company when an investment firm bought the family out. Money is tight but I am staying positive.

I paid to have mine done and glad I did.

I just did my own install. There is a new center piece you can buy that winds both springs at the same time with a drill. Had the springs tensioned in about 2 minutes. Easy and safe way to do it over the old method.
