I had an idea to make a dining room table...my wife thought I was out of my mind. I know my way around metalwork, but I've never done any real woodwork.
After digging around, I was able to source a nice oak slab that could be trimmed down to 32"x82"x3" The stress cracks in the slab were filled with resin and sanded down. Then I bedded a 2" bar stock into the table top. The bar stock was leftover material from my FIL's metal shop that was closed down after he died of brain cancer almost nine years ago.
The base for the table was fabricated using I-beam and square tubing.
Cutting the grove to bed the 2" bar stock
Test fitting the bar stock
I stamped our names into the bar stock before bedding it to the table top with resin
I debated on what product to use for the finish, but opted for this stuff
This is the finished table
