Anyone have plans or pics of DIY quailfeeders. Also, does anyone have any experience as to whether or not they are effective. I have a property with a decent quail population and would like to increase their numbers or at least keep them the same.

Made 8 of these.
Need a 55 gallon barrell
Funnel & lid
8 inches of 4x4 sq tubing.
Cut a 5" triangle out of each sie of the sq tubing.
Tack weld the sq tubing with the point of the tri angle pointed up to the center of the barrel.
Place the funnel in the barrel and tape it to the sides using metal/airconditioning tape.
Make 4-6 " u" shaped cuts along the bottom edge of the barrell. Bend the U up to make a rain flap.
Fill with milio and put lid on and your good to go.

I've got about 6 out, but mine are really simple and run out quick.
All I've done is take the 4" pvc pipe, the thin cheap stuff. I glued a cap on one side, the bottom amd tjem drilled four 1/2 or 5/8 holes about 1/2" abouve the bottom, and just slide the cap on the top. Then secure it to a tree, or in my place, put in a t-post to secure it to.
When I fill mine up where the quail are it will only last about 2 weeks.

I never took pictures of'em.........but take a 55 gallon barrel and cut approx 6 holes in it with the torch, right at the bottom, about 5 inches high and 3 inches wide (quail sized) evenly spaced around the barrel, then take one of these.........
Steel not plastic, and drop it down in the barrel until the skinny end is about 1 1/4" off the bottom of the barrel, then screw it in. Then tape around the top of the funnel with foil tape as mentioned (otherwise feed will get throught the gaps around the funnel) unless your funnel fits really tight. I welded 2 inch legs to the bottom of the barrel to keep water from running through the bottom in heavy rains.
MOST IMPORTANTLY! DON'T PUT THE FEEDERS OUT IN THE OPEN! I like to set them right beside a tree, in an area with plenty of ground cover for the birds. Then take a 16' cattle panel and wire one end to the tree, drive two t-posts in the ground approx a foot from the feeder evenly spaced opposite the tree, bend the panel around the feeder into a circle and wire the other end to the tree and both t-posts. Then put an old pallet or even a dead tree limb over the top of the panel to provide more cover/shade/protection from hawks. Fill with milo, or hen scratch.
Doesn't do anygood to feed them if they have to get out in the open to get to it.Last edited by Dale Moser; 01-20-2009, 08:01 AM.

Yes, the idea is for them to get inside the barrel under the funnel. That in conjunction with the cattle panel (which also keeps hogs/cows/most turkeys, out of it), pallet or brush on top, and some natural cover around the feeder will help keep the hawks off the quail birds. I've even drug up some brush to place near the feeder for added cover.
That funnel is from the www.ultramaticfeeders.com

good ideas, only problem i see with setting feeders out specifically for quail is over time they will be concentrated to that area and predators figure that out quick. best way to feed them is just drive feed routes with milo in the feeders. that way ur not concentrating them and they have better odds against predatory birds.
