For the gloss finish if you want it more "soft", run 0000 steel wool over it lightly and it will buff down to a nice satin. Wipe clean and then apply a thin coat of clear paste wax on it and bingo...

That rifle deserves a nice classic scope with a gloss finish to match the barrel and action.
