    Free TrailCam Cell Service (Almost)

I've been messing around with some cell service projects and ran across the freedompop.com site which offers FREE TEXT, TALK, and DATA, although limited and a bit skewed. It will only work using the email option and you will not be able to use text to adjust settings or to command instant photo. I know it limits the function of most cameras today but it's FREE (Almost). After I figured out how it works I thought to use it in a cell trail camera and see if I could get it to work. It has been working for a couple of months with no issues and it's FREE (almost)! It will only work on ATT/TMobile towers.

So here is is what you do.
    1. Go to here
and order your sim card. Right now it's 25 cents it ranges from $4.99 to $0.25 so this is the cheapest I've seen. This is the only fee you will pay as long as you opt out of the trial offers before the end of the first month. I suggest doing it at time of activation. Follow these instructions to DOWNGRADE to FREE plan. I also used a CC with only $10 on the acct so that they couldn't get me for more if I missed somehting. So far I only paid $1.99.
    2. Wait a couple of weeks to get it in the mail and activate it as described in the flyer it comes in.
    3. Place it in your trail cam and connect to your computer.
    4. You should have some kind of software that came with it and should look simliar to the following. First setup the APN

Select Customer and Customer1 then fill in the APN fields with freedompop.foggmobile.com ( It's on the SIM card flyer)

Then setup your email this will ONLY work using the (MMS) email NOT (SMS) texting.

Then enter in your email outgoing server information I suggest creating a new gmail but you will have to go in gmail and allow a lower security option. When you login to your gmail it will send a warning that a device is trying to send from you acct. Just confirm the steps and you are good to go.

Then just save the setup to your trail cam or SD card.

There should be an option to upload config file from the SD card to the camera.

    5. Turn on the camera and give it a test. Check your gmail and see if the picture was recieved.

    6. I setup a dropbox and have the gmail forward all new attachments to it. That's why I suggest creating a new email acct so that you won't have anything else coming to or sending from it. I used https://ifttt.com/ to set it up along with send a text to the other guys that wanted it.

It's been working nicely and would be a great tool for the off season where the extra functions of the camera may not be needed. The FREE account lets you send 200mb of data a month, that's about 4000 picutres a month per SIM card. That is more than enough for my needs.

The cameras with an app or website that they upload to will most likely not work (Covert/Spartan/Bushnell). The older ones that let you enter in the APN should work.

Maybe I missed it, but what camera are you using?

        Thanks,
        Tim

I think the old 2G coverts would work but have not personally tested them.

I am using a JagerPro MINE Camera for pig traps. I have several and the $20 fee per camera was crazy so I just use one ATT card and when i get hogs coming in on a regular basis I'll swap out the SIM and use it to trigger.

Should work on any Cellular Trail Cam that emails or Texts to you directly, not through an app or website.

The covert and such if there is a firmware update that will let you enter in the above info then they should work as well. http://www.trailcampro.com/pages/tra...rmware-updates

It looks like prior to 2015/16 Covert will probably work.

Working on a DIY for a hog trap that uses a ell phone to trigger the trap then I get a FP sim for it and I would be totally free minus the initial sim cost ($0.25-$4.99)
