    DIY Generator Box

I use a Honda 2000i generator at our place to run the AC etc during the hot months up at our place. Even though these generators can run in the elements and are tough as nails, I still like to protect it the best I can. It is the life blood of our setup when it's Hot out.

My main objectives were to cover it from rain, block direct UV rays, easy access for starting and refilling with gas, and the box be mobile/light.

I may build a permanent box one day but the thought of rats and mice living in the box while it's not in use worries me and wouldn't be fun to clean out.

So, I found a large enough plastic tub that would house the generator.

I then found a dryer vent exhaust tube.

A scrap piece of 4in pvc was used on the plug-in side. I caulked it in at a downward angle to keep rain out.

The rest is pretty self-explanatory from the pictures.

Even though the generator is already incredibly quiet it is even quieter now that it is in the Box. I'd guess 30% maybe even more.

Also to answer the question before it's asked; the exhaust does push hard enough to open the vents but I'll probably prop them open just to help airflow.

    Total cost $30

Great idea but honestly not sure how well it will work without a better seal at exhaust.

I think those generators have a DC out put on them. Maybe instal a dc computer fan in the intake pipe to force fresh air in and exhaust/hot air out.

I agree the exhaust seal is still a work in progress.

I had thought about a small fan just wanted to test before I went thought the trouble.

This weekend will be the test and I'll see how it does.

        Thanks for the input.

Just make sure it has enough air flow where it doesn't get to hot.

            Computer fan installed.

Just going to use a 12V battery to the run fan this trip and will recharge the battery with a solar panel during the day.

I don't use the generator to power the house during the day so the panel should keep the battery charged up.

I plan to get a DC plug in the future to run the fan

cool idea ... with as small of an exhaust pipe probably could have used a 3/4" EMT conduit or the like.... I like the fan addition.

Agreed, I went the route I did so I can jerk the generator out easily and use elsewhere.

I also didn't want to have to construct any supports to hold up the vent tube.

Whats nice about this tub is that the metal tube easily detaches from the plastic dryer vent. So I can load it full of gear on my way to the ranch without losing a ton of truck bed.
