Just like any other blade, it's going to get dull. I doubt you'll find a loaner.

And just like any other bit it can be sharpened. Don't you rain on my parade man.

It's not $6, but it will put a 2 1/8" hole in your log. get an extension and go to work. Make sure you have a good strong drill with an extra handle. You could also go with the 2 9/16" bit for $4 more.

Forgot to mention that the drill will need to be very stout. These woodboring bits won't work on a cordless drill.

I would look around and find someone with a drill press. Most drill presses the table can be lower or moved out of the way. Big drill bits deep in wood can get nasty, a press would be a lot easier. $0.02

Thanks. I'm thinking I will go with this 2" bit for $20.70 and a 10" extension for $14.

That's because of torque, right? I have a stout corded DeWalt drill that I will probably use.

This would also be great because the press would likely have variable speed. I am reading these Forstner bits dull quickly at high speeds due to the steel overheating.

I'm sure the 2" bit with a 10" extension would get the job done. And yes, these boring bits need a lot of torque. I'm sure the corded DeWalt will get it done with the 2". I have a corded Black & Decker that will push a 2".

Fire comes to mind as well. Would really add some
                  Character

I think the Indians used fire to hollow out a log for a canoe.

We'll turn this into a live thread for a bit. Got the first stump back into the shop to try my 1" spade bit. At 16" diameter, that's almost 200 square inches of space to drill.

Lots of progress. Biggest obstacle was getting past those jagged edges left over from the chainsaw. 12 gauge shell for reference.

Yeah! Look what I have created! I have made fire!

I once read somewhere that some indians used to do this to make canoes put of one piece logs. I hope it works for you!

That is a cool pic with the fire!

It turned out awesome. This caveman should have thought about fire along time ago. That's how Gluk was able to get his own cave and all the women.

As you can see, the fire burned down to the bottom of my holes. It would have gone farther, but I was getting tired and wanted to go to bed so I doused it with water.

At one point I went inside to take a shower and the coals reignited and got a little bit out of control, burning some parts that I didn't want burned. Oh well, I shall call them character marks.

I can't wait to do this again on a new project. No joke, if I wasn't such a busy man, I would **** sure take a stab at building an old-school Indian style dugout canoe.
