    Finished product:

So...to use new steel would have saved plenty I time. I was going to prime it and paint it, but figured knife makers will probably enjoy the raw steel look as much as I do.

Haha...hard to believe a professional like yourself doesn't have 3-4 of them .

Bucksaw seems like we both have the similar system today. I have put a 2x4 into a bench vise and then put a screw through one of the tang holes to hold the knife in place. Can't wait to get this one in my shop.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. It was fun and I hope it helps a few folks out.

This one will soon be on its way to Foot Patrol, let me know if anybody else needs help getting one.

Update, I sent the vise to FootPatrol and he is putting it through its paces. As I figured, the wooden block/spacer/bushing...whatever you’d like to call it, needed to be sanded down more. He told me he then glued leather to it to ensure it doesn’t mar the work piece. I think we are both concerned how much pressure could be applied to the wooden block, so I went ahead and made some out of steel.

I found a piece of pipe that would fit inside the 2 3/8” pipe and cut it to 3”. I then cut it in half, lengthwise. I ground down the edges to prepare it for welding.

I had some 3” x 1/4” strap, so I cut two pieces at 1 3/4” to fit inside the split pipe. I ground down the edges of these and laid them in the pipe and welded them solid.

Went ahead and ground down all the edges and polished them up a bit. Came out pretty good.

I suppose if a work piece is too thick, not knowing the real thickness of some of the knives y’all make, one half of the steel bushing could be used with one half of a wooden block...sanded down more if needed.

I bought some thin suede leather today that I think will work just fine. Looking forward to the new bushings. The vise is working like a champ and I have been using it ever since I got it. I have 2 knifes that will finish tomorrow and another that is close behind that one.

^That sounds fantastic! Can’t wait to see some photos of your knives. I’m not planning on painting these bushings, as I don’t want it to be an issue for the leather adhering.
