Made these for the wife's birthday tomorrow. Used 1/2" X 8" pine, made the box 2ft long and 8" high X 8" deep. Also added some half round molding to finish the box top. Once I built the box, I took a plumbers torch with a fan tip to it. Treated the inside to truck bed undercoating, then added several coats of polyurethane semi gloss. I bought some potted plant hangers, hacked off the hooks and connected to the back to add a decorative touch to the bottom. And again hacked some more hangers to attach to the box so they can be hung on our 5ft. tall pipe fence and easily moved.
