If it's going to hang, horizontally, on a wall, I'd cut the ends so they're not square.
They could be cut round or even better, some kind of irregular shape. IMO, the square ends take away from the natural flow of the plank.

Oh, and I LOVE native red cedar. It's one of my favorite woods.

It will soak up a LOT of poly before you get an even finish. Don't get discouraged.
Kevin, the board is going to be attached to the wall. The ends will not. The top will have about 8-10" between it and the ceiling. I have a piece that will attach to the bottom and will come out from the wall. It will have a landscape on it with some kind of color greenery on it. I just hope my dog doesnt try to mark it and hike his leg on it.

Well, finally got it done, but there were several changes. First it went from one wall to another and vertical to horizontal. Gotta love the whims of a wife...

Although it is not what I had in mind when I started out, I had fun with it and I have a couple of other pieces of cedar that I will toy around with.

That's an awesome looking display. I just showed it to my wife and she loved it! We've got 4 rams and I believe we're going to do something very similar for them. Thanks for letting us steal the idea from you
