Can't top what Fireguy said. Get a good polish by using increasingly finer grits at angles, as he said. I usually go to 400 on my belt grinder, then 400 paper, then 600, then 1000.

And as others have said, BE CAREFUL. The buffer is easily the most dangerous tool I use. In fact, I go out of my way not to use it.
