Just swivel the seat so you are facing one end or the other instead of the front or back. That way you do not have to worry about which way the hinges are and the cooler will be a bit narrower so you can swivel further around. Just like your son is sitting in the second picture.

I think I'd have off-set the seat toward one end. Not enough to turn over if you lean, but enough to leave a little shelf to set your aimin fluid, and a box of shells.........but I guess your setup will work ok.
