    Gun Safe Lighting Question

Anyone completed any projects involving lighting inside their gun safes? I just bought a Cannon 48 gun safe around a month ago and it's too dark in my garage, so I am looking to add lighting since it already has plugs inside the safe. Any input would be much appreciated. Gracias!

Sting of LED light string from Lowes.

Snaked them up and back on the back wall of each shelf.

Kept plugged in all the time.

Yep, seen LED light kits for safes or just DIY LED like mentioned from Lowes or Home Depot. LED are nice as they don't get hot and last longer.

Here's what I did with mine:
            1. Drilled a 1" hole in the body (there was no factory knockout)
            2. Install pass through receptacle - http://www.cabelas.com/product/Liber...h-All+Products
            3. Install 24" Original Golden Rod - http://www.goldenroddehumidifiers.co...ifications.htm
            4. Install 18' length of white LED rope light in track - http://www.amazon.com/Spacing-Christ.../dp/B001BI6TPK
            5. Install motion sensor switch - http://www.lowes.com/pd_358709-207-M...3D2&facetInfo=

What happens is the lights are on a 1 minute timer, then they shut off. If you continue to move around, the lights stay on. Close the door and the lights go off after 1 minute.

I took apart the whole interior of my safe. I installed the receptacle, and hid all the wires.

I mounted the track (clear - http://www.amazon.com/Rope-Light-Cha.../dp/B002ZPECKC) around the door, so the rope light is not in the way, and not really visible

I mounted the motion sensor just below the top shelf, so it's not visible when you open the door.

I put the Golden Rod near the bottom, and mounted the brackets for it to one of the partition walls. It is a small space that I really won't miss.

It took me 2-3 hours to do the work. It was harder to move the 900lb safe than to perform the work.

I grin every time I open the door.

Two years later: I was just about to start a thread on this, but decided to bump this one and keep all the info in one place. I'd really like to DIY a battery powered LED strip setup. Battery because I want easy access during power outages and don't wanna drill out my safe wall. LED strip because that's the best way to get an even amount of light to all parts of the safe.

There are kits on the market that do almost what I want, but not quite. The cheapest battery-powered one at that link is $95, takes 8 D-Cell batteries, and has light bars, not strips. This kit is really tempting at only $40. It runs on 8xAA, which makes me happier than D cells, but still not exactly what I want. It does use strips though, and already has the switch built in. I'll probably buy it just to check it out.

My goal is to create a switch based, 18650 battery powered system. Will update this thread as I build and open to suggestions.

                  Goal:

How about a deer feeder battery, can get here cheap sometimes, pull out every couple of months and slap on a charger. Will be cheaper than D's or AA's or other batteries, plus don't take up much room

That's not a bad idea, and there's a TBH guy selling them locally for $8. I'll have to see if the charger I use for my truck battery has a switch that would set it to work with the deer feeder battery.

I decided to buy two of the Lite Tech kits for about $50 each. He was running a special and reviews make it seem like a solid product. I had already totaled more than $50 just in parts with my DIY kit, so this may turn into an Open-Your-Wallet thread instead.

My step dad put some motion LED lights in his. Two of them. Come on when the door opens. They aren't super bright but better than nothing. And cheap & easy.

Academy has the Kayak 12 volt LED lights for $14.00. I put one string on the inside above the door and second one on the left side and wired into a wall switch then on to a 12 volt rechargeable battery. All wires are hidden along the side and under the carpet.
