    Ranch help

Need some help from the community. I own 2 1/2 acres that I have a 2 year old mare free range on the back two acres. I am putting up a 3 strands barb wire fence to separate the back 2 acres. My plan is to keep her out of that back acre so the grass and weeds can grow. A small pasture. My question is what do you all use or what do I need to water that acre?? I purchased a tripod sprinkler tractor supply that supposed to spray out to 80 feet put only sprays around 40 feet. I’m using 3/4” pvc. Maybe I need more water pressure?? Please chime in. Thanks

Not sure if where you are located or your normal rainfall amount. But many people like to think they can water an acre or more with a residential well. An acre-inch of water is equal to 27,000 gallons.

So if you are just using a household well putting out 5 gpm, it will take about 90 hours to put on one inch of water. (Almost 4 days running continuously).

While it can green up the area, I am not sure if it is cost/time effective.

I did not know that about barb wire and horses, I went immediately to google and found that it is not good for horses. Thanks. I won’t be using wire!!!

And yeah we don’t get much rain here in the valley. I guess I will just let the water run for a couple of hours a few times a week and keep moving the “sprinkler” around. It’s city water so I’ll let be and see how things work.

        thanks gents.

Since you are on city water, keep in mind that some (maybe all) cities base their sewage rates on how much water you use. So not only paying for water, but they also assume you have more going into the city sewer system. But a few hours a day might not matter much.

2 acres won't last long. Better buy plenty of hay. Good luck.
