I've been fighting the issue of "lack of storage space" since we moved into our house in '96! I inherited my Dad's "pack-rat" gene and so we're always needing more space to store things. It takes all I have mentally to be able to get rid of stuff. But about every 8 months or so, I get so mad at all the "stuff" that I just start throwing things away! But I've needed additional shelving for a long time to get stuff that accumulates off the floor. I always have to move way too much stuff if we have to squeeze the cars into the garage.

This past Father's Day weekend I gave myself the gift of more shelves! (Of course, I had to spend my energy building them, but that's ok!)
I previously had this along the outside garage wall: 2 shelving units that totaled 45 sf of shelf space...

There were a lot of items stacked/leaning/hanging in the space between these two shelving units that had to be cleared out and then all the stuff on the shelves themselves.
A Saturday afternoon with a pile of reclaimed wood and I ended up with a total of 87 sf of shelf space, not to mention the additional storage space under the bottom shelf that keeps the compressor, generator, fishing cart, floor jacks, table saw, etc. that are either too big or too tall to go up on a shelf (that alone effectively added another 30 sf).

The big, long shelves are 2 feet deep x 12 feet long, and the top shelf is at 6.5 feet tall. I only have 8 foot ceilings, so I was rather limited in how high I could go. Plus since the shelves stick out beyond the garage door opening (about 6"), I was also limited with space underneath the door tracks.
Shelf spacing is as follows:
- Bottom shelf is 28" clear off the floor
- 2nd shelf is 20" clear above the bottom shelf
- top shelf is 18" clear off the 2nd shelf
The smaller 3 shelves on the end were originally not included in my design but an after thought. Two are 24"deep x30" long and one is 24" deep x 36" long.
Bottom shelf is 36" off the floor to be able to clear the air compressor
The other two shelves are spaced out at 16" clear.
I only bought two sheets of 7/16" OSB plywood. All of the rest of the wood was either reclaimed from a neighbors old wooden deck remodel, or from a lease member's house remodel.
$48 for the plywood and Home Depot cut the sheets for me.
$11 for a box of Kreg pocket hole screws.
$59 for the total build (not including my free labor)!
(I guess you could factor in another $20 for the 24-pack of Lone Star Red I drank while playing with power tools!)
Needless to say...it didn't take long to fill up the shelves! But it got a ton of stuff off my garage floor and that was the underlying goal.
(I still need to get rid of a bunch of stuff....)

I have another 52 sf of shelf space along the back wall of the garage (you can see some it in the 1st & 3rd pics above) that needs to be sorted thru for junk. That process is coming soon, but those shelves will stay. They were part of a set of metal component shelves that my Dad has. They're heavy duty.
But I do have plans for some more shelves above my built-in work bench on the other side of the garage.
That'll be coming soon...
