    Duckboat Blind Ideas

    Ok guys and gals,
I've just bought a 12' flat-bottom in the hopes of turning it into my duck hunting special. I've been researching for ideas on how to build a lightweight and removable blind for the boat.

Now, I know there are lots of handy men and women on this site, so I was hoping to gain from your experiences.

I need something light and easy to set up in the dark. I don't want to break the bank. I like the scissor-style blinds, but am open to any of the alternatives. Please, keep in mind that the blind needs to ride on the boat about an hour or so to the honeyhole from the boat ramp.

This is an aluminum jon boat with some age on it. To be honest I bought it mainly for the trailer and motor (which are newer and in great shape). The boat has seen better days, but will make it a season or two before I buy something new. I hunt by myself, so any ideas that require two folks to set up won't help me out.

Let's see what yall have done in the past! And, please be specific in giving your how-to's.

    Thanks Everyone!

        What's a duck?

        .

4"x4" welded wire mesh; cut 30" to 48" high by 4' to 5' lengths. Find some cane in someone's yard and get permission to cut it. Most folk will gladly let you cut some as it grows very rapidly year to year and is hard to kill (we had some in 2 of our yards). Thread the cane through the mesh in the upward manner. Instant blind panels that can be set inside or out side the boat. And stacked for transport. When the cane dies and turns tan, most of the leaves will fall off. But still makes for great and natural blind material. Here is a pic of my first flat-bottom (for reference only ) I built back in the early 1980s with the cane panels. Panels can also be used for a land blind.

Do a search on the net for scissor type blinds, they are easy to make and cheap.

I've got plans for about 6 different types of scissor blinds, but there is something missing in the design. I don't know what it is but they all seem to be missing some ingenuity.

I was hoping someone on here might have a new spin on the same old tired design idea.

My dad and I built one for a 14' Jon years ago. Really simple to built and set up.

1/2" EMT bent into a rectangle same size as boat. Then build 4 legs. Use lock nuts and double nut the connection on legs to top rail so it an still move and lay it forword and down flat Ours would extend out past the front while it was down and still inside the gunnels so it won't snag on every bush. Once we stand it up we had one angles anchor bar to lock it up. the. Used camo netting and brilush to cover it. Basspro and Cabelas has marsh grass for 40-50$ a box. Box has (4)- 5' long by 4' tall mats. I am going to build a blind for my new boat this year but won't start on it till we get closer to season. I can draw somethimg up if you want more details. Cheap easy blind that worked and one guy can set it up in about 1 min to raise rail and 5 min hanging mats and brush.

if you don't mind drawing that up with some detail, so that an idiot could build i'd love to have those plans.... that sounds like something worth trying.

all the other plans i've found or drawn myself have just been too ungainly to transport very far over windy water.

I guess every other duck hunter here does it from the bank?

I built an PVC rectangle frame, wove the net on the PVC on both sides leaving extra for the front and rear as "curtains". Dropped it down in the boat on the sides to transport... then set up with 4 legs just push them in and I had brackets on the toward the corners in the boat to fit the legs in, so they were sturdy. Any type of clip in the front and back to swing your curtains around the front and back and you are set. Best part was that if we did want to hunt the bank we could carry the blind with us and set the frame up on the bank just like in the boat.

I used bungee to keep the net rolled and next to the frame, 2 on each side...I used the heavy net with plastic camo....Having plenty of net is key and it will be the most expensive part of the blind.

I cut it so that the bottom would just be in the water so it covered the sides of the boat. And enough in the back to cover the motor.

As long as you took a little time to roll/fold the net up, I never had a problem with it tangling.

That's nice and simple dugie. lightweight, quick and easy. Thanks for the post.

My thing is: I can't hunt from the bank in most of the places I hunt. Either brush is insanely thick, or it's private land that I don't have permission to hunt on. So..... I want something that will stick to the boat and only removable with some effort.

When I hunt from the ground it's always in a layout blind.
