    Framing a Well House

My wife and I just moved to a new (to us) house on five acres in Spicewood, TX. We are really enjoying it. I have a well and want to build a well house to cover the pump and electric utility box. The only problem is, I don't know jack about framing. Any suggestions for me on what to do, or some good web sites/books for framing virgins? The well pump and settling tank are sitting on a concrete slab that is 11' x 9'. I want to enclose the whole thing.

    Thanks in advance.

Simek, you already have the pump on a slab, so my idea would be to use cinder block. It would be better insulation and protection from the elements. You would of course need a door and roof which may need to be wood, or some other material. It would also help if you know someone who has experience in laying brick or cinder blocks. Lowe's or Home Depot can help with figuring how much material you would need, and cost. Just my 2 cent's. Good luck with whatever you build.

simek, congrats on the new house. to frame a small enclosure is not that difficult, i know easier said than done. lowes or homedepot have some books on how to do what your looking for. the book will cover your bottom plate, stud length, how to frame a door, and insulation is almost self explanatory. the think i would consider is maybe pouring a small footing around the outside edge before building. this is to help prevent wood rot if you may have a water leak. keep in mind to make your door wide enough to get the tank out if you ever had to replace it. good luck

You could just cover it with one of those tool sheds from HD or Lowes, but that would take all the fun out of it.

Here's a Popular Mechanics "how to" build a project, you'd need to change to fit a slab foundation- but it gives you an idea of how to do it.

What you need to know before building a shed for housing your growing tool arsenal.

Or hire my son who's a framing carpenter and graduating college next week

If your well is more than just a cistern....
Keep in mind that if you may someday need to get a rig up to it to pull riser piping , pump, or something.
This is why most well houses are lightly framed, often with lifting rings so they can be slid or lifted out of the way for well servicing.
