    hog log build-instructions

ive been wanting to build one of these for a while. finding info online was kind of hard so i just drew it up in my head and bought the stuff. ill be building it tomorrow so ill post pics when i can.

    materials:
    4"x5' PVC 8.23
4" PVC cleanout with cap 8.43
    4" PVC coupling 1.92
    4" PVC cap 5.93
    16" animal tie down screw-stake thingy 3.97
    I-Bolt 0.52
    1/4" quick link (2) 4.78
    chain @ 1.10/ftx6' 6.60

    total $40.38+tax

turned out to be more expensive than i expected. you could do it for less though depending on what you have laying around etc. i chose to go over the top erring on the side of too heavy duty rather than too light. will post pics when i can.

I wouldn't trust the animal tie down screw. I've had two of them ripped out by hogs in the past. T-post ring a ring dropped over it is the way to go, IMHO.

hmm what part of the country was that in?

as rocky as my place is ill be lucky to get it all the way down so i find it hard that it will be ripped out. ill see how it feels by pulling on the log first. maybe ill just chain around a small tree or something instead.

My family use to use them a few years ago. We used t post to tie the hog feeder to and I remember one particular feeder was rolled to the point that the t post broke off at the ground and we found the log about 300 yards away through thick brush. If they want it they will find away to get it.

I think what he is trying to make is a big long round object with a couple small holed drilled into it, so when pigs ram it and roll it around corn will slowly come out and keep them in the area right?

I have seen people make these out of kegs tied up with chains and swivels to telephone poles. Please post pics

I'd chain it around a small tree if I was you... Those hogs are powerful critters.

A friend of a friend made one of these and attached some sort of bell to it so he could hear when the pigs were there. He placed it not far behind his house. Apparently worked great and the hogs got use to the bell.

I made 2 of these at my uncles place out in polk county and the hogs want nothing to do with them. They have been out there for 3 weeks and not even been touched yet.
Hog tracks all over the place and under feeders but nowhere near these, any sugestions?

yes i was thinking of putting some bells on it just to make more noise. cover me sneaking up on them and let me know when theyre working it.

maybe bait the area with just corn or hog attractant etc around the hog log to get them there and turn off feeders? you might want to wait till after deer season to turn off your feeders idk. maybe its just me but why would a hog want to work to get corn out of a hog log when he can just eat it off the ground under a feeder?

i didn't get to put it up this wknd. i was gonna put it up in our back pasture where theres some hog signs but we moved the goats and 3 of our dogs back there. the dogs will keep the hogs out for a while. once we move that bunch ill set it up and see how it does. i got and extra swivel to go at the beginning of the chain just to help keep it from binding up if the eye bold gets caked with mud and doesn't spin easily.
