    re: that recent shoplifting thread

From an article in this morning's WSJ:

Brick-and-mortar retail’s indisputable edge over e-commerce is that consumers can get what they want immediately, and can touch and feel the product before buying it. Rising theft—and stores’ measures to prevent it—could dull that edge.

The National Retail Federation estimates that shrink—an industry term for loss in inventory—amounted to roughly 1.4% of retail revenue in 2021, or roughly $94.5 billion. Most of that shrink is caused by theft. In a CNBC interview earlier this month, Walmart Chief Executive Doug McMillon said that if the retail theft issue is not addressed over time, “prices will be higher and/or stores will have to close.”

Target said that the rise in shrink, including theft, reduced its gross profit by more than $400 million in the first three quarters of its fiscal year, compared with a year prior. For the full fiscal year, it estimates that its gross profit will take a $600 million hit.

Forever on here and maybe still today, there was/is a mindset that was "I'm not taking a life over something my insurance will cover".

Most of the companies whining about it also require their employees to step aside and not intervene. I've read instances where a well intentioned employee tried to stop either a shoplifter or prevent a woman having her purse snatched and the company answered by firing the employee and in some cases suing them.

I think retail stores should start paying for armed security to help with the problem. I don't believe it is either the duty or the responsibility of a cashier at Wal mart making $15/hour to confront a shop lifter.

With that said, the main problem with shoplifting and theft in general is not the store policies. It's the lack of punishment provided by our criminal justice system. There's almost no deterrent because our society doesn't adequately punish criminals for these types of actions. Sure, you can blame the retain store for not pursuing shoplifters, but in reality, what's the point if the perp is just going to walk.

You are right, store employees did not sign up to confront criminals or risk their lives doing so. I'm a cop, I've dealt with more felons stealing stuff than I can remember. Some of which were currently wanted and danger people. I would not want my eighteen-year-old son or twenty-year-old daughter confronting a shoplifter, the store can hire armed security or off duty cops to do that. There is nothing I hate worse than a thief, believe me.

It’s easier for retailers to just raise prices to cover shrinkage losses and blame inflation.

The honest customers therefore end up subsidizing the thieves.

Their "loss prevention" staff could of they'd be allowed to. I've seen them trying to get in the way of people walking out of the store with goods, thief was a lady and kept trying to lunge her body into him and he'd dodge out of the way because they both knew he couldn't touch her. I bet he'd rather be allowed to grab her by the neck and bodyslam her if he was allowed to.
