Nat guard and State guard have already been deployed there for most of the last year working to build fences and provide logistics to border patrol. Just now being stated publicly about the guard units. Some elements of State Guard are being trained by DPS and given powers of arrest. It's coming to a head soon I hope. Border towns in Texas can't take any more. They are being overrun.
I have several thoughts on this. One, it'll be good if it's done well, but govt doesn't do things well. IMO this gives Texas the authority it already had to take care of business and keep people out.
Two, yeah, the timing is fishy. But, if you were in a potentially challenging election season, would you stick your neck out before things were decided? I also wonder the extent to which he was watching the AZ governor race given that Kari Lake had said she'd do the same thing day 1.
Three, whatever improvements are made will eventually serve the people of an independent Texas. The whole "asylum" thing? That's UN, which we wouldn't immediately have to be a part of. The whole immigration court system? That's federal and we'd get to throw it out and rebuild. The current lame rules of engagement on the use of force? Yep, that's federal too. An independent Texas could have the border closed in a couple of months, and a functional system rebuilt in a few years.
