It is not Liberalism, it is love of self.
Liberalism is just a made up name, and is explained by nothing more than opinion.
Dig into the psychological side of this, what is known as Narcissism, and you will find the answer.
Specifically, define the difference between cognitive empathy and emotional empathy.
Understand it, and it will answer your question.
If liberalism is a disease, then so is conservatism, neither being any better than the other when you get outside of opinion, and consider society as a whole.
Each is as equally at fault as the other when we consider where society is as a whole.
