IRS Special Agents have always carried firearms. They have statutory arrest authority like any other special agent in any other agency. Now how many of the 87,000 are admin/auditors vs special agent is an important question. The only agency needing that many LEOs is CBP in TX, NM, AZ, and CA.

The IRS has always had armed investigators. You would be surprised how many federal agencies have an armed component. These positions are completely different from the IRS agent that audits your tax returns.

It's not for your everyday income tax cheater. It's for collecting (confiscating)all those firearms that have delinquent taxes owed. This is after they start taxing all firearms and ammo.
