from the I will believe it when I see it dept..

By experimenting with alternative methods of wood processing, scientists have come up with a new hardened form of the natural material that can be fashioned into sharp knives and sturdy nails. The team reports the resulting knives are nearly three times sharper than a standard dinner table knife,…

For the folks that like to make knives - I thought they might think this to be cool

Sounds like they finally discovered Quebracho wood. It was once used to make ship propeller shaft bushings. I have made several knife handles from this stuff. Hard is not the word for it.

            Key here is

nearly three times sharper than a standard dinner table knife

“Standard “ is very subjective and Most people do not keep sharp knives
When I go to a friend or relatives house and we are cooking out I bring my own knives for a reason

The only thing I'm aware of that is sharper than steel is obsidian glass and of course the time tested fart which can go through 3 layers of denim jeans without making a hole.
No doubt I can stabilize a piece of wood and make it sharp enough to cut a steak or my finger but no way in hail will it last longer than it takes it to absorb some moisture and get dull.

I was thinking Manzanita... that stuff is darn near bullet proof.

Manzanita has a Janka hardeness of 2350 lbft
                        Quebracho is 4570 lbft
It is easier to sand and shape brass than this stuff.
