In the podcast I posted, Eric Weinstein uses an interesting analogy that I hadn’t considered, probably would have never considered. He states that the federal government sees the virus as a threat to our society, similar to war against an enemy nation, and that despite the fact that the vaccine is not 100% safe, the government expects its citizens to take it at the potential risk of personal harm in the same way it expects the citizens to offer their sons for conscription in times of war. Regardless of administration or political parties, selective service is a similar voluntary relinquishing of personal freedom for the benefit of the larger society.
It’s an interesting concept to think through. There was of course a lot of anger and disillusionment in the 60’s and 70’s over selective service during the Vietnam War, and with the way things have degraded it’s no surprise that the government would receive the same thing now for a similar expectation of the populace.
