Everyone literally .......for the past 100+ years have known that Afghanistan holds the world's richest mineral deposits along with opium.
Heck,, part of the space race is around the same minerals as they may be easier to mine in out of space, than dealing with those lunatics. Furthermore, China has tentacles everywhere and that's nothing to be shocked about.
