    Cloud Computing

The events of the past few months has caused my mind to wonder a bit. I am an IT guy, so I see many things from an IT perspective. I have never been a big giant fan of co-lo (co location) data centers, or cloud computing. But the industry has run to them just as fast as it could.

Think for a minute about the cloud. Office 365, Azure, etc. are cloud based solutions. A whole lot of us use them with regularity. Nearly everyone I know does.

Where is that cloud exactly? What if it is in China?

Doesn't matter where it is really. If it's somewhere other than your house or office that you physically have possession and control of, somebody else can lock you out any time they want to. I'm not a fan either. Hard to avoid it too, though.

I’ve always been very uncomfortable about cloud computing. To me it’s just another easy way for information to be stolen and sold.

I'm retired IT. 35 years. When I first heard of "Cloud" all I could think of was "Somewhere Else." A place where we had no control over the integrity of our equipment and our data. With no direct oversight of our customers data assets, jeopardizing the trust placed in us by our customers. The industries we served held lots of very sensitive personal and financial data. Loss of control of which could have devastating consequences for not only the customers but also for the company. It would simply put us out of business. Lots of my peers did not appreciate my advice complaining that I was not "Forward Focused." That I was living in the past. But I stuck to my guns and still do. I referred them to this scene from the movie Heat.

The "Cloud" is not your friend.

I would add to this. Even if it is at your house, they can still get it. How many laptops these days can you completely remove the battery, or manually turn off wifi? They can turn your laptop on remotely, through your wifi. Ask Sharyl Atkinson about that...

Nothing is secure. If you have something to hide, I would not save it on any computer anywhere.

But corporations keep ALL of their data on cloud based servers. Within that lies patient health records, patented designs, you name it. Yet, there it is.

My point is just this: what if the cloud is not what we think it is?

This has always been my thought as well.

Realistically if info of any kind has been shared via an external network its out there. Doesn't have to be in the cloud to be stolen when stuff is bouncing off servers all over the world. Yes there are secure networks, vlans, etc, but unless the physical network is yours and yours only and being sent via intranetwork its hit a providers central office server/router somewhere to get to the next location.

This is exactly why the early adopters are transitioning to hybrid cloud, Easier from Azure gonna cost you from AWS. keep critical data on prem.

As data costs have dropped like a one ton rock, why have we had such a rush to get off prem? Why?

Never did make any sense to me, but it was like it was a race to get there. Now what? People are moving it back. Kinda too late - toothpaste and tube comes to mind.

But all this with Q and stuff just makes me wonder if we as a nation didn't just make it a little too easy. And companies like Microsoft were way to happy to jump into the clouds.

I don’t know what everyone is all riled up about. The mods of this site aren’t real. They are AI that’s been designed to monitor redneck pop culture.
