I agree. And they weren't trying to screw their landlord. They have been amazing tenants- taking great care of the property, always paid their rent, and always worked with the landlord to help with costs when he couldn't pay for repairs. This is simply a misfortunate circumstance where both of them lost their jobs a few weeks ago and have not had any luck finding work with what we are all dealing with. They asked for a reduced payment for 2 months, with a promise to pay everything back. Landlord decided to play hardball and turned them down. So now he will get jack chit for as long as the law will protect them.

Again- I'm not saying it's ok to squat. And these people would NEVER do this under normal circumstances. Life hit them with a curveball from hell that I hope none of us will have to face.

I don't have an answer for this question, mike. I'm not a landlord. But going by what everyone else on TBH says- the landlord should have at least 6 months of rent saved for dealing with a squatter.
There is some unfortunate advice being given out in various places and people don’t seem to understand that none of this means that renters can just stop paying for a few months then start paying again when they allow evictions to resume and everything will be ok. All this means is that they will have to catch up or be evicted when that time comes. The renters owe the money and will have to pay it or they will eventually get kicked to to curb......and sued for anything that they owe. This “no eviction” thing does nothing to help anyone.

The folks who won’t be evicted today will be evicted eventually. It just delays the inevitable for folks that decide not to pay.

What is unfortunate is that folks see it as either good fortune (luck) or bad fortune. I carved my own fortune. I worked 2 full time jobs, my wife sacrificed as I was putting 12-14 hour days 6 days a week.

You either want it or you don’t. And the only way to get it is to make the sacrifices necessary and put in the work required.

You may see this as me being on a high horse. That’s fine. I used to live in that victim mentality too. Until I resolved not too. Then I made every effort to change my fortune.

No sir- I definitely don't have a victim mentality. This isn't about me or my situation. I simply pointed out another side of the story (even said I don't condone squatting) for Buff to consider, and you chose to use your life story to set the bar as to why people should 'keep an obligation'. If you can do it, then everyone else should do it too? I'm sorry, but this sounds a bit judgmental to me.

Again, you successfully set out to reach your goal in life- congrats. There is nothing wrong with that. We all (hopefully) have our goals in life, but some get kicked in the gut along the way. My friends will recover from this- and they will make it right with the landlord once the dust settles. I hope Buff's tenants will do the same.

Roy - your squatting friends are stealing from their landlord. No other way around it. Have they cancelled their internet, cable, had a garage sale, sold their smart phones, mowed neighborhood yards, etc etc etc. Probably not because if they had their mindset right with money then it wouldn’t take just a week or two for their finances to reach the end of their rope.

Stealing?? Really?? Wow, I never knew that.

If you read my posts you would know that I agree. I don't know their entire financial situation, other than this is where they are at- as are a ton of other people. Not my place to judge. If I was a landlord to long-term tenants like them- I'd cut them a break rather than lose them for good. But that's just me. Others obviously have a different mindset.

LOL Thats a good one! You have me rolling!

In all seriousness though if that were done first then they could maybe ask landlords to lower rent etc... To skip straight to landlords taking the entire brunt is BS10

First off no one is starving Or even close to it.

What was this curveball? I don't understand why you would ever, in a million years, feel the curveball has anything to do with the landlord. It's absurd to pick a convenient person and make them pay for someone else's problem..Period.

And sorry but just why in the @@@@ should the landlord have to save money but not the tenants? Talk about two-faced hypocritical..Geez

I'll rant a little more... It shouldn't matter what the excuse it..medical, dying, children starving, lost jobs, whatever. It's none/zero of the landlords business or problem.

And you plan on going to the bank and crying so they pay the note for you?
Why can't landlords be broke also? Are they all rich or something?

Just because someone rents out a house doesn't mean they have money. You know a lot of people are underwater on a home purchase and rent instead of sell. Some even have to add money to the rent that's collected to make the note payment. And now they may have lost their job also and have 2 house payments (rental and home).

I guess just F em because they own two homes and are obviously rich.. Geez

Dude layoff the sippy juice and go back to your 'sky is falling' rants- those are far more entertaining. Seriously, the remark about saving 6 months rent was sarcasm. I guess I should have put a smiley face after the comment? And for the last time (because you obviously missed the point, as I'm sure others will as well)- I do not support squatting. Yes, it is a crappy thing to do to a landlord! Yes, landlord's do not owe their renters anything, nor are they responsible for the financial troubles of their renters. And yes, I know landlords also have bills to make. (Thanks Captain Obvious for pointing that out! Try re-reading my original post! Here's a smiley face so you know- sarcasm again. ) I already mentioned their 'curve ball' so feel free to read just a few posts ahead of your rant if you really want to know.

There really is no need for us to discuss my friend's situation any further on this thread. It won't change their situation. Yes, it sucks for all landlords who are going to face similar situations with their renters. I have already wished Buff good luck with his tenants who seem poised to squat. I will update the thread when my friends make good with their landlord so you can sleep well at night knowing a landlord didn't get screwed over. Another smiley face...

I only posted "the sky is falling" threads before they actually fell...If you didn't notice. Why post them now after they fell?

And you can say all day long that you disagree but it's pretty obvious you're looking for justification for your friends. Sorry you didn't find any here. You even claimed if you were the landlord you'd cut tenants a break...which is laughable since that in and of itself requires a crap ton of assumptions.

Anyway..Sorry if I came across rudely. I just lost my patience with everyone trying to pass off their problems on others.

I definitely understand- and I apologize as well for trying to justify my friend's situation. These are some pretty rough times for everyone. This **** bug doesn't care what anyone's financial situation is- so we are basically all in this together. It is already hitting close to home with our members, and it is definitely going to get worse. It's not worth all of us getting bent out of shape (myself included).
