Here come the Feds. Big Data and Gov

Apple and Google have been ordered by the U. S. government to hand over names, phone numbers and IP addresses of thousands of gun scope owners. It's an unprecedented move by the U.S. government in asking Silicon Valley to support a weapons export investigation.

Own a rifle? Got a scope to go with it? The government might soon know who you are, where you live and how to reach you.

That’s because Apple and Google have been ordered by the U.S. government to hand over names, phone numbers and other identifying data of at least 10,000 users of a single gun scope app, Forbes has discovered. It's an unprecedented move: never before has a case been disclosed in which American investigators demanded personal data of users of a single app from Apple and Google. And never has an order been made public where the feds have asked the Silicon Valley giants for info on so many thousands of people in one go.

Exactly. We're the government and we're here to help.

They have never misled us, lied to us, used tax money unwisely, and have always stood by our constitutional rights... So I doubt they change things now

Looks like it’s targeting ATN scope users who downloaded the app. Seems the not for export rule on those scopes was not followed and they are trying to see who downloaded the app to get the where and when info. My bet is it’s too broad a reach and the court will shrink the scope of the inquiry to non USA users if they grant anything at all.

that's ostensibly what they are are looking for. but, every time one of these requests comes up it shines a light on just how much of our information is out there. even if you think the gov has a legitimate need, there's certainly other bad actors that can gain this information for nefarious purposes.

I will bet the gov already has the info and found what/who they were looking for. Now they just have to make it legal to make it stick.

Pretty much this, they don't ask the question unless they already know the answer.

Apple has been pretty good on privacy in the past, remember when they refused to unlock that phone for the feds a while back?

We'll see what happens but I have no doubt Google will roll over..

Besides, the feds already know what guns we own and we are kidding ourselves if we think different
