Civil war would probably mean the end of our nation today. Can you imagine how China and Russia and Iran would view that? They'd sit back and watch us tear ourselves apart until it we got weakened enough for them to roll over us. All that defending the 2A heroics would be for nothing.

I am pretty much a 2nd Amendment absolutist but I agree with Shane that going through a FFL for private sales would not be a huge imposition. Of course it's easy for me to say because I don't sell many guns and when I do it's usually by consignment at a gun shop. I don't know how effective the law would be as criminals will still find a way to get guns but maybe it would make it harder for a bad guy to buy a gun from an unwitting good guy. I also don't see background checks as an "infringement" in violation of the 2nd.

John, I put a lot of value on your take on most things too. I'd like to hear your take on all the NFA rules we have to abide by now? Thoughts??

I just don't understand why so many politicians and people constantly think more laws, more background checks, more BS ideas pandering to the uninformed is ever going to fix anything. There is no gun problem or "mass shooting" problem. Where the problem lies is society. The push for progressivism the last 50-80 years has led us to exactly where we are right now. Everyone puts the blame on someone or something else. No accountability, responsibility, morals, and so on. The more the left has removed Christ our lord and savior the more ridiculous and crazy people have become. Times will just get worse and worse until we fix society, not guns, not background checks, not any laws.

^Spot on. The best we can hope for politically and legally is to just hold things together long enough for the spiritual battle for the misguided hearts and twisted minds to be won. The root cause and ultimate fix (if we can ever get to a fix) lies there, not in politics or the legal system.

Times are a changing, that's for sure. I think it's only a matter of time before we see major change in our country. An example is Ellen Degeneres. She had one of the most popular shows on TV in the 90's ( I think it was), as soon as she said she was a lisbo they pulled her off the air that day. Now she's one of the most popular and powerful women in this country. How did this happen? Public opinion has changed towards gay folks, it's acceptable to the younger people, it changed slowly. We're seeing the change now in how firearms and the people who own them are viewed. I'm not sure how we can reverse this perception any time soon.

So Dan Patrick isn't against me selling to a "friend" or family member without a background check? Define "friend". Pretty loose term there Danny. Does this mean I could sell my gun to a "friend" that I just met 2 hours earlier? Or do I have to have known the individual for a longer period. From childhood? Work friend? Church friend? Neighbor friend? Drinking buddy friend? Distant friend? Facebook friend? Cellmate friend? Friend from high school that I haven't spoken to in 20 years? What standards must be met to be a friend?
Family Member? Blood relative? In-law ok? How about 4th cousin twice removed that I have never met? Step son? Step father? Step brother? Foster child.
This will turn into a field day for the trial lawyers.
Pandering to the left with loosey-goosey rhetoric won't cut it Danny. The left will shred you a new one for leaving the gate open too wide. True Texans can smell this from a mile away. You had better get specific before this blows up in your face or its DOA.
