I think that a majority of people tend to vote for two things. Those are party and name recognition.
When they vote against a person specifically (like Trump or Hillary Clinton) it is usually for against a party or anger towards a person. (anybody but….)
Let’s face it, many people don’t pay much attention to politics. They absolutely know which party they like or who makes them mad.
With incumbency comes the name recognition that has to be overcome. That usually only happens if the incumbent has angered a significant number of people. An example might be Paxton against Cornyn. Without anything else Cornyn might start with a 60%-40% lead in popular opinion. That is only because Paxton is also a statewide officeholder but it wouldn't shock me if more than half of the adults in the state has no clue who he is. If it was just a state representative or county commissioner, Cornyn would start with a 80-20 lead.
So how does a person like Paxton make up that 20%? I doubt that anything that Paxton can say will swing more than a very few percentage points. What would push him past Cornyn would be anger. If Cornyn makes enough people angry, Paxton will win.
Are there enough people angry at Cornyn to matter?
How many voters in Texas even know the difference between the two?

AND……I think what really puts Paxton over the top is that he is a statewide office holder too AND…. the fiasco impeachment led by Dade Phelan really put Paxton on the map as a fighter and taking a stand against heavy handed politics. In effect he is a Texas version of Trump. Like Trump, Paxton carries baggage but the politically motivated trials make them look like fighters against oppression, AKA The Swamp.
Just like some of the stupid courtroom tricks that they tried to pull against Trump and made him more popular, Paxton might have that same benefit. He is no angel but is a populist like Trump.
I wouldn’t be shocked with a 56-44 win for Paxton.
But there is still incumbency to overcome……

The other thing that would hurt Paxton is if 2 or 3 RINO repulsicans enter the race just for purposes of diluting the vote; that and along with many demoKrauts voting in the repulsican primary. Crossover voting is indeed a known strategy for DemoKrauts... What remains to be seen is if demoKrauts would rather run against Paxton or Cornhole in the general...
