Can someone explain to me how increasing my cost of goods into my home, which have outpaced income increases by a large margin for a number of years, makes everything better? We spend what, 75 years becoming more dependent on imported goods and now trump will fix it by charging a tariff that will just get passed on to the consumer. I think someone forgot to carry the 1. Someone is getting screwed, but I don't think it's the Corportation in China making things.

My hope it is short term and will bounce back, but this is a game of chicken that IMO may tank the economy, stock market, and and skyrocket inflation to 1970s numbers. I'm in a long position of hanging in there now and it will be over in less than a year, not a 5-10 year. I'm nervous about long term, because i'm in(was in) the 2-3 year retirement window.

The worst thing is we will pay more and the debt will keep on raising. None of this is offsetting debt, but will increase it at a faster rate. Market is down $2 trillion in the last hour.
We won't pay more for very long. People will start buying American goods. Companies will manufacture here. Breaking our dependence on Asian manufacture is absolutely critical. It's gonna happen in case of war regardless. TRUMP is doing it on our terms.
now for the loss in stock market value... that is artificially gained and artificially lost. About to be a money making opportunity. I'm not talking about day trading , I'm talking about buying steel(nucor) and retail(Walmart) on this dip.

It was a trade war that kicked off the Great Depression. In the mid 50’s tariffs actually help jump start our economy. It’s not necessarily clear where this will lead. I do not buy that these are simply reciprocal tariffs. I am sick that they raised the debt ceiling by 5 trillion dollars. Why do we need to do that if this will lead to an economic boom.

I really hope The President is right, I just don’t get how this will benefit us long term. I do not believe that other counties are going to back down. No one voted for me so my opinion is of very limited importance. We will just have to see how it plays out. If this fails I hope The President can find the humility to change course.

They have been getting absolutely wrecked...like destroyed. I'm on the phone with them everyday. There are very few business related threads I can participate in on TBH because I have zero knowledge of that trade/industry ect....but this one I do.

My personal opinions on the tarriffs:

The acclimation to paying $.99 for 100pk of plastic spoons, and $39.99 for a full size steel backyard shed has eroded American jobs. Can't keep at,it at this pace.

This will bring countries to the table. This will create more jobs here in the U.S. This will make us less dependent on other nations.

Will it also make your $.99 pack of spoons go to $1.79....yes.

                      Interesting Strategy:

Switch to tax base to consumption instead of income as the very rich class is so unfairly taxed, Keep the money in the hands of the movers and shakers and with old money families with who have produced proven results over generations. This should also help the on shore banking industry as there will be no need for the powerful to have offshore accounts. It should also kill the practice of businesses moving profits offshore as the previous tax act failed to do despite promises. If there is no tax to avoid the why home your business Bermuda or the Caymans.

They can also get rid of ERISA (401k) as there will be little to no income tax in the future on savings. This will relieve employers from providing a match and will free employees to invest their funds however they want saving them the cost of 401k management.

Finally, if they can hasten the collapse Social Security and Medicare this will save employers another 10% of payroll taxes.

If he can get these things done there will be no going back as reverting would be nearly impossible.

Not sure if true, it was on the internet......that Vietnam and and few others have dropped their tariffs on U.S. goods completely......looked up U.S. power tools and Bostich is U.S. company but just looked at my coil nailer and it's made in Taiwan.....not sure on Taiwan but one would think with us their only hope they wouldn't tariff us.

This will be the result in some instances, and it will be a long term positive for us. But there will be some countries that will quickly cave and cut their tariffs in order to keep their exports to the US going. There will be few, if any, countries who will win the game of tariff chicken against us though. They are all talking tough and beating their chests, but they can't compete with us. We've been subsidizing the whole freaking world, and it way past time for that stupid practice to end. They can't win when they need us worse than we need them. Once we get through some short term pain, we'll be in a better position around the world, one way or the other. The outcomes won't look the same with every country, but we'll end up with the net win in each of them. Some bigger wins than others. Some may end up being closer to a draw, but we'll be better off in the end by not subsidizing the whole freaking world any more.
