Not because I disagree but because you asked.

    Matthew 19:21 ESV
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

There will never be a solution that pleases everyone.

Abbott flip flopped on school choice because Jeff Yaas donated roughly $6mil to his campaign. If you don’t believe me, look it up. It’s all about the money and how our elected politicians can skim more of our tax dollars.

The poor? The people that Work? Are you actually saying the poor don’t work? This is entitlement at its worst and you have just shown its ugly head. Any bill that helps less than 2% of the population is a waste of time. This money would be better spent on helping the 98% of other students. Of the supporters, less that 2% will be chosen. Ther will be big money jobs created to oversee the entire program. I wonder who will get those jobs?

Unwad them, sir. He's referring to large portion of society that is complacent suckling off the govt teat. Much larger proportion of those folks in the large cities vs the rural schools mentioned above.

I've got a newborn (our first) that'll likely attend private school based on what i'm hearing/seeing in public schools these days. I appreciate Bullhead's insight. Curious how this plays out.

The government will be involved in either way this goes so I wouldn't put much faith in any so-called solution. Many will lose and a few will win, some of the winners will be big winners. The whole problem stinks.

FYI, my kids started school in the 80s. They both could read when they went because I taught them to by using phonics, the way I learned. I wasn't trusting the education system even back then. This isn't new.

I can agree with this post 100%

The other point is a slippery slope to no end.
The "poor" people in America today are far richer than "poor" people in America have ever been. Sure there are a few honest good people screwed that are poor but THAT imo is so rare it's crazy. And that's who the Church(es) should be helping get back on their feet. Not taxpayers.

No , he has lumped them all together but people see what they want to see!

before you make the step to enroll your child into Any school , go have a look around in their libraries , spend some time there . You will be appalled at the books they are allowing these children to have access to . Public schools are over run with this stuff and a lot of it is evil but parents don’t pay attention. Christian private schools have so many horrible books and we would all think these private schools would be the safest place for our children.

Congratulations on your New Child by the way

Our kids dont go to the School District we pay taxes in, we pay $1500 for each child to attend our out of district school and have for10-11 years. It's the only school they know and its a small town school with really good values and a traditions. Wouldn't change a thing, however if the fed wants to pay for it I am in...

But there are only 350k students attending private schools in the state. So adding 100k (30% increase) of students is going to drive tuitions up. Most good private schools have waitlists as it is. It's not like quality capacity can be spun up overnight. So to me, it begs the question, will this really help Texas students in aggregate?
It’s impossible to help in aggregate, because there has to be parents that want to help in aggregate. And there is not, Thus why people are fighting for an alternative.

In mean time it will not drive tuition up but will make it more competitive as smart students, who are of lessor means financially, now may have the means.

Wealthy families have the most education advantage in public school system as they can afford the top districts, but yet someone that isn’t of higher means but is an active participant in their education kids education is shunned, so that “ status que” of a failing mass education system can continue to pull potential out of students so that it evens out education disparity… maybe just maybe we need to stop worrying about propping up the complete aggregate at hands of the ones that actually embrace education.

The question was asked, "How will this help the poor?" Well, here is one hypothetical that might help answer that question.

Up until now the argument has been surrounding private schools getting tax dollars. What about this:

A single mom lives in Houston but works in the Woodlands. She is working 2 jobs and doing everything she can just make ends meet for her child. As of today, her child is zoned to a HISD school. That first grader would either have to go to before school day care or wake up on their own, make their own breakfast, and catch a bus to school. With School choice, the child can ride to the Woodlands with its mother, attend the Woodlands school across the street from the mothers work. This saves the single mom a ton of money in day care, and provides a safe alternative to the child from having to be on their own for most of the work day.

School choice isn't just for private schools, it also allows a child to attend a school/school district they are not zoned to.

I think you may be misinformed about the out of district school choice. There is definately no money being given for students to transfer to any public school they want. That would open a whole new can of worms

From the way i understand the bill, Jason is right. Now he left off 2 important things. 1) the child is going to have get the voucher, which as already discussed is extremely low odds. 2) per the bill, the school still has the right to refuse if they are at max capacity. Which alot of public and private schools are already at max capacity.

Perhaps, but I have not seen or heard anything on that. All I have seen is this
                                • $10,000 per year for each student who attends an accredited private school.
                                • $11,500 per year for each student who attends an accredited private school with a disability.
                                • $2,000 per year for each student who is homeschooled, to use on qualifying educational expenses.
