It's being reported there's an active shooter in Madison, WI at a Christian school. Not many details yet.

Looks like a jv shooter and 4 others deceased, 5 injured.

Count now is 5 dead (including shooter) and 5 injured. When will this s*** stop. They need to stop making our schools soft targets. Private/Public schools it doesn't matter, just protect our d*** kids.

They just said it was a student but they do not know what gender student was. For some reason people are blowing that little tidbit up on SM.

IMO it has FAR more to do with society versus being a soft target.

I think any solutions to "harden" a target should be on the table for discussion. We need to be more proactive in these manners and focus on what is the most controllable means. School resource officers are 50/50 in my opinion. They range from actually doing their job of being present on campus throughout the day to sitting in their office. I agree that society is 100% to blame for the increase in these incidents, but we cannot effectively control societal views in the short term. We can go through all the "talking" points about mental health, household dynamics, etc. But that is the long game of stimulating change. My 2nd grader has 10 more years of school and my 1 year old has 17 more years of her life till she will be finished. How long will it take for the societal views to change?

You ask to what extent I am willing to pay to harden a target? I honestly think metal detectors to start are a reasonable option. We walk through them to board a plane, enter amusement parks, concerts, and many other places. Heck the stadium at our district actually has them in place for entering. Why not the schools themselves? When is the last time a shooting took place at a HS football game?

Armed administrators, maybe. Schools often have individuals with military/leo training who are more than capable and often would be willing to step up in the time of need. At minimum make folks think that there are armed administrators whether there is any or not.

Clear bag policies are to me a easy solution to implement. Again, the district I worked at implemented a clear bag policy for the Friday night football games along with their metal detectors, but does not require it for students going into the actual schools, why not?

I spent 9 years in the classroom, ranging from JH to HS and I can say there are areas that should be addressed when it comes to school security. Many times it comes down to "funding", but schools do not mind passing bonds and such to build multi-million dollar football stadiums or other state of the art facilities. So I don't quite think its a lack of funding issue, but more of an appropriation of funds issue.

Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn't but doing nothing will for sure not change anything.

I don't want to live in a world of fear any more than the next guy. But I want to know that when I drop my 2nd grader off at school, or when my wife leaves to go teach high school that they are going to be safe while there. In Texas students are required at minimum to spend 1,260 hours in school if they are enrolled in public education, that is 14.4% of a year just using 24 hours a day for 365 days. That is a lot of time where we as parents are entrusting another entity to provide for and protect our children.

This is it. Our world is one big, soft target no matter how many barriers we try to put in place.

Since nearly all shooters are on prescribed mind altering drugs like Ritalin and others......we can start there. No ADHD drugs until your 18-21.

You should try to sit at some of those tables and try and discuss these ideas. It will make you want to strangle somebody having to listen to all the hairbrained ideas that some people come up with at these discussions. When you say "any solution should be discussed" you open the doors for all kinds of things that aren't even remotely feasible to consider.

Its some we will have to deal with until our society changes and puts God and Family first.
