I haven't read this whole thread so forgive me if it's already been asked/answered, but why and how did official pardons come about and why do we need them? Circumventing our courts seems unnecessary and counter productive.
Edit: I guess I should say, I realize it's part of the constitution, but I'm confused as to why our founding fathers thought it was a necessary power afforded to one person. If our justice system, comprised of many people, can't be trusted, it seems like giving one person that kind of power would be even less so. I don't get it.
