Actually it was several humans. So, now they union is forcing a worker to stay in that job instead of allowing the company to create new more valuable positions to operate that tech.

By not allowing the companies to automate, the unions are directly reducing the ability to improve safety and efficiency. There are other ways to improve job security for these workers. Also, while the rest of the world moves into technology and automation, it will become more and more difficult for the US docks to handle the loads on the ships. They are cutting off their nose to spite their face and soon they won't be able to breathe.
    Very well put.

That union thug is making a GREAT argument for why we need a lot MORE automation on the docks. If they want to sabotage the entire economy in order to get their way so they can impede more efficiency, lets get rid of them all.

Yep or what prevents them from continually doing the same thing, like a toddler throwing a fit but this one trashes economy.

He really stepped in it. Especially saying he would cripple the nation regarding food. Was this dude voted in? How often does a union vote on a boss?

Depends on their bylaws. But, I can tell you this. A guy like that is not going anywhere. Those union members know he will stand up to the foreigners that are highly invested in those ports.
Our union president Tom Conway died last year and was a tough sob. People would have followed him to hell and back. He was a pit bull when it came to negotiating. But, one of the nicest guys away from the table. He was highly respected by the members and the companies. He did not hold back though when it came to union business.

How much does it cost to employ a union worker compared to a non union worker?

Why do these ports HAVE to hire union workers?

A prime example of how politicians get rich.

So you would support all fast food workers to start a Union?
And all other sectors? Even though costs would skyrocket to you as the consumer?

Or do you support this union because it's pretty much one of the few and benefits you directly (while all other non-unions where you spend your money keep costs down)?

And that article didn't answer either question that I could tell. I get they have the right, but does employer have the right to hire non-union workers?

                            Of course they don't.
What a mess this country would be if everyone had a pension and was in a union.

I don't believe unions are a good thing for all industries. I do believe it is needed in the trades and skilled labor segments. For those that think these dock workers are not skilled labor maybe you should try and operate some of the equipment they use. And, climb down in the hull of those cargo ships. Some shops are closed shops and you have to be union. Texas is a right to work state and at the refinery where I work we have about 4-5 company hourly employees that are not in the union. All the other hourly are union members. Many of the contractors are not union. The higher skilled contractors belong to various labor unions. Salary personnel are not union where I work. Your questions are very hypothetical and would take me forever to answer. Not all unions are the same. The ILA that is on strike is a strong hard core union. I am in the USW and it is strong. Teamsters is decently strong. But, not what it once was. I cannot comment on everyone's laws and bylaws because I am not a member of those unions. I have a general idea how some of them operate because I work for a company that has around ten refineries. Most are USW represented. But, we have a couple that are Teamsters and one that is The Operating Engineers union. And, a couple that are non union. With us if we strike or walkout it has do be done in a legal manner and per the agreements in the contract. If we don't and it is deemed an illegal strike we can be fired and replaced. I assume that is how the ILA's is written also. Their contract has expired and they have the right to strike until a new one has been bargained for, agreed upon, and ratified.
