Problem is you cant believe anything the media is reporting. A military offensive is a sledge hammer and not a scalpel so probably thousands. PR is not on Israel's side. They should have gone in a lot harder and a hell of a lot faster and ended the offensive before there was time to second guess the offensive.

I think there are very few “innocent” men and women that are Palestinian. The little children are of course, until they grow up and are indoctrinated. For every Hamas fighter, there are many who give them food, shelter, and a place to hide. Same in Afghanistan, etc. It’s a dirty business, but the alternative for Israel is dirtier.

Using ground forces to root out the militants rather than carpet bombing put the Israeli soldiers in far greater harm. Not to mention every single time the Palestinian leaders have been offered a peaceful solution they have rejected it. If the Palestinians would lay down their arms today there would be peace tomorrow. It the Israel’s lay down there arms today, there would be no Israel tomorrow.
