    Chew Crew Graduation Hunt

My oldest son Jake (17) graduated from High School this year. Like any good son he wanted to go hunting for his graduation gift. We ended up at Boiling Springs Ranch hunting with Blaise Ahrens.

Blaise and his family were extremely nice and they were living on the most beautiful ranch I've seen in Texas.

End result: Jake put on a shooting expo. He did better than I could have done. We were after hogs and an axis doe. The hogs came in the first night at dark-thirty. It was really too dark to video but I was able to lighten up some of the stills to barely make the hogs visible on video. Jake waited patiently for the biggest hog to make her way around to our tripods. He settled in like an old pro and waited for her to turn broadside.

Equipment: Bear "The Truth" bow set at 60 lbs, CE Maxima arrows, Rage 2-blade broadheads.

The first shot was perfect, tight behind the shoulder. The sow let out a death squeal and ran about 40 yards and gave it up.

We were pumped and celebrating when the shoats decided to come back in for more corn and leave dear old mom to herself. Jake nocked another arrow (this time with a lumenock), and commenced to making another perfect shot through the heart/lungs of the 30 lb. piglet. This one ran in a tight circle and died about 6 yards from the base of the tripod.

Blaise showed up and we recovered both hogs quickly and got them skinned and in the cooler. We tried for axis on two more hunts but were unsuccessful. We saw a parade of wildlife during the hunts: oryx, blackbuck, fallow, turkey, whitetail, and hogs.

On the last hunt, Sunday morning, we decided to bust out the rifle to increase the chances of bringing home some axis meat. We made a hasty brush blind and set up some stools before daylight. We were overlooking a hill that had a shady bottom area with a water trough in it. We set from 6 am to 8 am and then it happened. A medium sized axis doe and a yearling stepped out to have a drink. Jake threw up the shooting sticks and my trusty Ruger Mark II .270 and commenced to drop the biggest doe.

The rookie camera man was filming the whole thing....but forgot to push record!

Anyway...we got the doe on ice quickly, packed up, and headed to our lease in Schleicher County. We filled feeders and set out cameras and hit the road home for the 6.5 hour drive.

It was a great weekend with my oldest son and I'm glad we got to spend the time together before he starts work/school soon.

Nice shootin' Jake. I'm very proud of you (in more ways than one).
